Ian is a PhD candidate at MIT in the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS). Ian’s research focuses on optimization, game theory, and economics. He seeks to improve market design and policy to reduce the cost of incorporating renewable energy into electric power systems. In recent work, Ian demonstrated how behavioral insights can unlock new value for retail consumers who have flexibility in how they consume electricity. Ian has coauthored a paper with Cass Sunstein on time-varying electricity prices, and he is currently working on a book chapter on electricity tariff design.
Ian has worked for Borrego Solar, Argonne National Laboratory, and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA-E). He was named a Future Energy Leader by IHS Markit.
